Top ten things to remember when discerning your vocation
Give yourself! Just do it!
That which makes a good priest also makes a good father/husband. What makes a good mother/wife is the same thing that makes a good sister/nun.
Once we have taken vows, we can know with 100% certainty that this vocation is God's will for us.
Most people do not feel 100% sure of their vocation going into it.
Good discernment is both active and prayerful. It means to seek to give yourself and to reflect on the events of your life. "Man can only find out who he is by making a gift of himself." JPII
As long as we keep sincerely and actively moving toward our vocation, God will have no trouble communicating His will by shutting doors if we are going down the wrong path.
The way to measure the holiness/goodness of a relationship is to see if your love matches up with Chist's full, free, faithful, and fruitful (as is appropriate for your relationship) gift of self.
If you are not truly free to consider celebacy, then you are not truly free to consider marriage.
Watch out for traps that take away your freedom. These include sexual addiction, cohabitation, pornography, drug or alcohol addiction. When we are not free, we can't get married, even if we have a wedding ceremony.
You will know your vocation when you can no longer bear not to give yourself to God by serving the poor, or your spouse, or your parish… whatever it may be.
